Generally beautiful old-school folk [accepting some
digitalised percussion/background] but it’s mainly piano and guitar and the full,
clear [sometimes echoed], resonant vocal that doesn’t come within another
continent of a fashionable affectation. Catchy hooks with multi-tracked vocals
add layers to the folk storytelling, as on The
Letter. 1784 is even more
adventurous in its vocal strands, but these can adorn songs that are perhaps
not as rich melodically as they could be. My favourite is opener Silver Moon, reminding most of Trees-era
folk – even some Principal Edwards – which is less ‘polished’ then later and that’s
what really appealed.
