Matthew Curry and The Fury - Electric Religion

Consummate Whippersnapper

It’s not so surprising that at only 17 years old, Matthew Curry is such an accomplished and empathetic blues guitarist – there are enough similar prodigies out there, Eric Steckel one of my favourites, though he’s an old’n now by comparison – but what does surprise is the gritty maturity of his vocal. I trust it is genetic rather than shredded, not that I mean it’s wasted – it is simply very established, and not just for Curry’s youth, but in addition him being quite a physical whippersnapper judging by current photos. Enough of the physical attributes [and I’ve avoided the obvious culinary puns about surname and sound]: the blues and rock on this second album is good stuff. There are strong pounding riffs and apt solos across self-penned songs from Matthew and band, Greg Neville on drums, Jeff Paxton on bass, and Eric Nelson on keyboard. The whole album exudes knowing and skill, eighth track Bad Bad Day a fine example of felt blues, consummately played with a neat B3 and guitar interchange.
