Don Ellis - Tears of Joy
This is more 'mainstream' then I expected. The only other Ellis I have and have listened to is a vinyl copy of 'Don Ellis at Fillmore' which I recall being more experimental. These are simplistic terms, obviously, but I wasn't expecting the big band sound so clearly. He did play for Glenn Miller, so there's that lineage, and there are moments where this recording - a live one - sounds like Buddy Rich and his orchestra [and apparently Ellis plays some percussion on this]. There is 'Strawberry Soup' which is superb.
