Again and Again, Thankfully
Returning once more as he continues to leave his memories
behind, this is a surprise second swan song as Campbell recorded these further
tracks when performing for what everyone thought would be his final album Ghost On The Canvas. Apparently, a number
of these familiar Campbell classics – Witchita
Lineman, Galveston, By The Time I Get To Phoenix [a sweet, sweet version] Rhinestone Cowboy [voice and electric guitar: superb], and others – were played
in jam sessions after the main recording for that last excellent album
[reviewed here] and producers Dave Kaplan and Dave Darling have built new but
minimal arrangements around these simple versions. So this is a stripped back
set, though not in the Rubin/Cash mode as these still retain quite polished
accompaniments. Yet it is Campbell’s unmistakable voice that continues to fill
these with their beautiful authority, a little more warble to replace the former
power and sustained notes, but tone and emotion not forgotten whilst other
attributes fade, and I have made a better attempt to capture what it means to
suffer that kind of loss here.
