This is glorious Southern Rock and Soul, separate or merged, and for Susan Tedechi’s vocal think excellence and/or the Two Bonnies, Raitt and Bramlett, and for Derek Truck’s guitar think excellence and/or any other fine soloist you care to mention. As for the whole band, think excellence again.
I know I normally romp through almost all the tracks in a
review, but take it as read this is the consummate first-to-last all-round cover-to-cover
a-z completearama magnificent deal, and the first two tracks will do to set the
vista: opener Made Up Mind
exemplifies this excellent whole: brilliant rhythm-guitar riff as foundation -
the bass line pounding in just off the beat - over which Tedechi’s singing is
soulful and sassy, and then Truck’s whining solo sets up the gospel-esque
interlude, before that rhythmic riff takes it off again. A great song and
performance. Next Do I Look Worried
slows the pace but not the power in that vocal, and Trucks rips up another
scorcher as the horns contribute their weight to one of the nine tracks that Tedechi/Trucks
have added their songwriting skills.
Enjoy.
