Warren Haynes featuring Railroad Earth - Ashes & Dust, album review

Blue Mergings

Prolific player Warren Haynes, notably of Govt Mule, has come up with a two disc set of fine Americana/country-infused songs ably supported by the band Railroad Earth [their last album reviewed here].

Opener Is It Me Or You has a Neil Young-esque structure before the wailing violin asserts its tone, whilst a rockier mood is injected in second Coal Tattoo. The prettiness of this collaboration is exemplified in third track Blue Maiden’s Tale, the mandolin and fiddle accompaniments beautifully played, and Haynes' mellowed gruffness of a voice adding further plaintive atmosphere. And so it goes: delicate mergings of bluegrass with Haynes’ warm vocal and fine guitar playing, the country blues of sixth Stranded in Self-Pity demonstrating some smart pickin’.
